Men’s Elite – First Round
With the first day of the Men’s Elite tournament in the books, there were several hard fought games with good talent to be found on all the teams.

Go Fast 11, Generals 5
This game was decided early on as Go Fast took a 4-0 lead into the second quarter. The Generals got two in the second but Go Fast just had too much depth for the Generals to mount a come back. In the second half the Generals were able to match goals with Go Fast but had to many turnovers to make a serious run.

Club All Stars 7, Dunn Financial 6
The last game was a great one at Edwards, both Dunn Financial and Club All Stars played extremely hard keeping the score close all game. In the third Ben Winston, a defender from the All Stars stole the ball and carried it the length of the field for a goal. The drama was amazing in this game as the All Stars scored a goal with :18 left in the 4th to go up by two only to have Dunn score a goal at :08 to bring the margin back to one. It was just too little to late as the Club All Stars walked off the field with a one goal victory.

Mermen 10, Rocky Mountain Oysters 4
The Merman came out strong and went up by a lot in the second quarter. Rocky Mountain Oysters struggled with their shot selection and paid for it with a lack sustained possessions. The Mermen could make some serious noise especially behind the strong goal play of Brian Phipps who ended the day with fifteen saves.

Team 21 13, Team Guttman 7
Team 21 the 4th seed coming into the tournament needed some time to get firing on all cylinders. Guttman had a four goal second quarter to take a one goal lead into the half. Team 21 got the score back to even by end of the third and found their stride in the 4th. Team 21 scored six unanswered goals in the final frame to seal their spot in the Championship bracket.

Merrill Lynch 9, Brine Elite 5
In a game that wasn’t as close as the score would make it seem Merrill Lynch showed that they could definitely be in the mix come Independence Day. Merrill Lynch took a 7-0 lead into halftime and put on the cruise control in the second half. Wearing pink jerseys, and with a roster stacked full of Division 1 players this could be the year Merrill Lynch breaks through into the top of the Vail Shootout.

Team Lax Grip 12, 5280/Tap Room 4
LaxGrip came out strong and took the lead within two minutes and never gave it up. 5280 showed signs of life in the 2nd quarter matching goals with LaxGrip. In the 3rd 5280 suffered from lack of possession time and shots on goal. LaxGrip had a cozy seven goal lead going into the 4th. The game got chippy at the end with five penalties in the last quarter. After a solid performance Team Lax Grip is a serious dark horse with the ability to make it deep into the tournament.

Young Guns 15, IAS Team Breakaway 10
This was a quickly paced game with fast and fluid ball movement from both teams. With a stacked roster the Young Guns stayed in control for the most part and led by an athletic defense, and a talented offense. For IAS Team Breakaway, Shay-Dog Cunningham had a fantastic performance with six points in the game. In the end Young Guns had too much talent and will find themselves on Ford Field tomorrow.

Jammin' Salmon 11, Team Black Seal 9
In a game between two evenly matched teams the Black Seals just couldn’t overcome a six goal halftime deficit. When the Seals finally got going they had gotten the Salmon lead down to two goals with 6:42 left in the 4th quarter. Salmon did a good job of holding off a young hard charging Seal team that had several good shooters. The second half salmon goalie, Maryland grad Tim McGinnis, made several key saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the win for the Salmon. For the veterans of the Vail Shootout winners bracket, the Salmon were paced by midfielder Chris Magrin who had five points on the day with four goals and an assist. The Salmon will face a tough second round match up with up and comers the Young Guns.
