Today's Report from the Shootout

Till we get pages for each division, here's today's data. We'll make revisions after our staff meeting/dinner.

Day 1 – June 28, 2008
The first day of Vail is upon us again and players and staff alike enjoyed a beautiful day in the Vail Valley as Masters, Supermasters and Grandmasters kicked off the tournament. Masters started with pool play while Supermasters had their 16 team field get right into it. The Grandmasters division started their tourney and the Chumash event blew its first whistle as well.

There are a couple new features for the Shootout this year, including a new blog from media coordinator Alex Smith. Check the homepage of www.vaillacrosse.com for updates. Also new this year is our Pointstreak software for statistics and results. There are some kinks early on (as in we lost some of the scores on some of the games), but we should be up and rolling well by tomorrow.

Day 2 will be a busy day in the Vail Valley as Boy’s and Girl’s High School gets rolling as well.

Masters Division:
With 6 teams total competing in 2 pools, the first day of competition in the Masters Division was slightly subdued, but four teams set themselves from the pack. Jagermeister took the #1 seed in Pool A by virtue of an exciting victory over Lacrossewear. Both teams will move through to the second round. In Pool B, the Silver Oysters and Middlebury had their way with Team MAC and then had a one-goal game of their own to decide the pool’s #1 seed. Middlebury took the game 4-3 and will move on to play Lacrossewear tomorrow. The top four teams in this division are all evenly matched and most staff anticipate tomorrow’s semifinals and Monday’s finals to be some exciting lacrosse.

Saturday’s Games:
Pool A
Jagermeister 13, Tribe Elders 1
Lacrossewear 10, Tribe Elders 0
Jagermeister 6, Lacrossewear 5

Pool B
Lax Gear/Silver Oysters 10, Team MAC 0
Middlebury 11, Team MAC 1
Middlebury 4, Lax Gear/Silver Oysters 3

Sunday Games:
Semifinal #1 – Middlebury vs. Lacrossewear – 10:30 am – Athletic Field
Semifinal #2 – Jagermeister vs. Lax Gear/Silver Oysters – 12:30 am – Athletic Field

Consolation – Team MAC vs. Tribe Elders – 2:30 pm – Athletic Field

Supermasters Division:
A large 16 team bracket took over two fields at Ford Park on Saturday as the Supermasters play completed round 1 competition. The biggest news of maybe the entire tourney so far was the FROGS upset victory over Elder Statesmen/Mr. Boh. The FROGS (stands for Florida Really Old Guys) have been in Vail for years, but never have made a mark quite like this before. They will be up against it in tomorrow’s semifinals as they take on a Lacrosse.com team that dominated Blivet 21-6. Both of last year’s tournament finalists, the Tri-City Canadians and Tsumani/Olde Quakers had little trouble with their opposition as most of the Supermasters standbys made it through to the quarterfinals in one of the most popular divisions in the tournament.

Supermasters Round 1:
Lacrossewear 9, Navy 6
Team Millenium Rock-it Pocket 10, Middlebury 9
Essian/Tap Room beat Colorado Lacrosse Club
Adidas Magic Wands beat Arizona Graybirds
FROGS beat Elder Statesmen
Tsunami/Olde Quakers beat Princeton Obsoletes
Tri-City Canadians 10, NYAC Founding Fathers 5
Lacrosse.com 21, Blivet 6

Sunday Games:
Quarterfinal #1 – Adidas Magic Wands vs. Tri-City Canadians – 12:30 pm – Ford East
Quarterfinal #2 – Lacrossewear vs. Rock-it Pocket – 12:30 pm – Ford West
Quarterfinal #3 – Essian Tap Room vs. Tsunami/Old Quakers - 2:30 pm – Ford East
Quarterfinal #4 – Lacrosse.com vs. FROGS – 2:30 pm – Ford West

Consolation Bracket:
Navy vs. Middlebury – 10:30 am – Ford West
Colorado Lacrosse Club vs. Princeton Obsoletes – 10:30 am – Ford East
Arizona Graybirds vs. NYAC Founding Fathers – 10:30 am – Donovan Park
Elder Statesmen/Mr. Boh vs. Blivet – 12:30 pm – Donovan Park

Grandmasters Division:
The Grandmasters Division is an 8 team tournament with all games taking place at 8:30 in the morning. The players aren’t sure if that’s because older guys get up earlier than everyone or if it’s just because no one wants to come out and see them play. Well, we didn’t forget the old guys Besides, how can you not fall in love with a team called the Nacho Mamas?

Grandmasters Round 1:
Gravediggers 15, Los Viejos de Adidas 6
Eldest Statesmen 12, Navy Grandgoats 0
Middlebury beat USA Stars
Mr. Boh/Nacho Mamas beat Rockies

Sunday Games:
Semifinal #1 – Eldest Statesmen vs. Mr. Boh/Nacho Mamas – 8:30 am – Ford West
Semifinal #2 – Grave Diggers vs. USA Stars – 8:30 am – Ford East

Consolation #1 – Navy Grandgoats vs. Rockies – 8:30 am – Athletic Field
