Millennium/Team Rock-it Pocket 12, Elder Statesmen 11
The Supermasters division championship was one for the ages as the Elder Statesmen and Millennium/Team Rock-it Pocket went toe to toe all game long. The Statesmen jumped on the board early, grabbing a 3-0 lead in the first few minutes, but Rock-it Pocket finally regained the advantage with four straight goals in the final quarter to grab a well-earned 12-11 victory. It was Rock-it Pocket’s second consecutive comeback in as many days after their thrilling 7-6 win over the Adidas Magic Wands on Monday.
Trailing by one heading into the fourth quarter, Rock-it Pocket found themselves two back after a brilliant fast break by the Statesmen with just under 11:00 to go. But that goal was the last for the Statesmen for over seven minutes as Rock-it Pocket poured in four straight to take their first lead since early in the first half. Tournament MVP Mike Perkins scored two of his game-high five goals during the run as the crowd began to overwhelmingly support Rock-it Pocket. During the run, goaltender Dan Cisneros was stellar, saving six shots in the final stanza.
Things were spirited down the stretch. After Steve Govett scored his fourth of the game to make it 12-11, the Statesmen had an immediate chance to tie, but Peter Smith’s high underhand shot rang off the crossbar. The Statesmen had opportunities at the end, but good defense and stout goaltending shut the door for Rock-it Pocket, who rushed the field with their families upon the closing whistle.
Early on, the Statesmen threatened to turn this one into a laugher. Three goals in the first half of the first quarter came easily and it became clear that if Rock-it Pocket didn’t slow down the tempo, this game was going to be over. Two quick goals by Rock-it Pocket at the end of the quarter made the score 3-2 after one.
That first quarter was indicative of things to come. Every time the Elder Statesmen started to pull away, Rock-it Pocket would come right back. The second quarter ended with a dramatic goal by Statesman Lance Savage with only :03 on the clock. Savage played well, notching three goals and one assist on the day.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Elder Statesmen got on a roll behind the play of All-Tourney midfielder Bill Edell. Edell was held scoreless in the first half, but had a hand in three straight goals in the third quarter to help stake his team to an 8-4 lead. But once again, Rock-it Pocket surged back thanks to Perkins and trailed by just one at the end of the third.
For Millennium/Team Rock-it Pocket, it was their first Supermasters title after winning the Masters several years ago. The Elder Statesmen have been at or around the top of the bracket since they first started coming, but fell to 1-4 in championship games since 2002.
