tl Flip's Post Tournament Remarks tr
ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST

Well, my face is indeed red, and not due to a lack of using enough #50 SP during my recent time at Vail.  No way.  I lathered maximum sunburn protection on my skin well before stepping out the door in the mornings for this edition of what was a very sunny 39th Vail Lacrosse Shootout.   The source of my flushed face is my embarrassment because I wildly threw out my very bold very early prediction of an all-bovine final in the Elite Division of the Shootout. Well, we clearly would see just how wrong you/I can be, and after all these years one/I might think I would know better. . . read more.

THE DUST NEVER SETTLES

After laying the Vail Lacrosse Shootout Masters, Supermasters, Grandmasters and high schoolers to a peaceful rest under cloudless skies and still airs that could rival any Santa Barbara Sunday, all things tournament felt warm.  The first four or five tournaments within the tournament had passed without stress for the most part.

tl Day 6 - June 30th Report tr

The Baltimore Crabs six-peated Thursday in the Dr. Tom Watts Memorial U-19 Tournament division of the Vail Lacrosse Shootout. Continuing the astounding dynasty for the crustacean from the east, the Crabs put an exclamation point on the game by winning in convincing fashion. The girls U-19 championship was decided in Edwards with Team HLA taking home the Gold Bracket Championship. The Men’s and Women’s Elite tournament got under way with games on 12 fields throughout the Vail valley. The weather was not cooperating on the 6 day of the Shootout; several games were delayed as rain and lightning rolled through the valley.

Friday will see the Men’s Elite quarter finals on Ford Field starting at 9:00am. The 2011 Men’s Elite winner’s bracket is one of the most talented in tournament history and should be great to watch. The Women will have their second day of pool play before they split into bracket for the weekend games.

tl Day 4 - June 28th Report tr

With 14 teams carrying full rosters and with multiple family members in player tow, the Supermasters truly has become a jewel sparkling in the Shootout tree. These over forty teams play an excellent brand of lacrosse for the most part, and there are many famous names mingling in these game.  These guys are in the prime of raging against Father Time and it makes for games that carry with them a great deal of emotion.  They still got it, but it’s not quite as effortless as it once might have been.

HS Girls action worked itself out cleanly in pool play with no tie-breakers needed to determine placements in the three divisions. The HS Boys quarter final games had a fair share of excitement, especially in the first game of the day between Brady's Bunch and Team Colorado. Wednesday's semi-finals should be fun to watch on Avon 1 at 11am and 1pm.

More than 52 teams in action today, it can be tough to keep up, we do our best.

tl Day 3 - June 27th Report tr

It was the first of four Championship days at the 2011 Vail Lacrosse Shootout as winners were crowned in two men’s divisions. For the third year in a row the Eldest Statesmen claimed victory in the Grand Masters division (50+ age group), and Team Hulu earned their first Vail title in the Masters Bracket. With two divisions wrapping up, the Supermasters semi-finals saw the Elder Statesmen and C2C Magic wands gain title births. Also, the U-19 girls and Dr. Tom Watts Memorial U-19 Boy’s tournaments began with pool play.

Tuesday's action will be in three divisions. The Super Masters Championship will be decided on Ford Field at 12:30. The Dr. Tom Watts Memorial U-19 Boy’s tournament will continue on in Avon at Nottingham Park on Avon 1 field and Avon 2 field. The U-19 girl’s second day of pool play will take place in Edwards.

tl Day 2 - June 26th Report tr

The second day of the Vail Lacrosse Shootout saw the cream rise to the top. In the Grandmasters and Masters divisions, semi-finals action was the focal point of the day, and in the Supermasters the final four teams set themselves apart. In the Masters division, Hulu avenged last year’s semi-final loss to Genesis, and on the other side of the bracket Team AGWA de Bolivia put away The Olympic Club with a strong second half. The Grandmasters division will see a repeat of last year’s finals, with the Eldest Statesmen and Los C2C Viejos advancing today. The Supermasters saw some familiar names advance, with three of the four teams in last year’s semi-finals returning to the final four this year.

The Zenmasters (age 60 and over) exhibition went well with more than 30 participants. The Zens brought a good feel to the afternoon, with the oldest player born in 1941 in addition to a participant from the first Shootout in 1973. Result: Blue 7, Red 5.

Tomorrow will be the busiest day of the 2011 Vail Shootout with five divisions playing on 12 fields from Vail all the way down valley to Edwards. The Masters and Grandmasters finals, the Supermasters semi-finals and the first round of both the boys and girls U-19 tournaments will all take place tomorrow.

tl Day 1 - June 25th Report tr

The 39th Vail Lacrosse Shootout began today with action in the men’s Masters, Supermasters, and Grandmasters divisions.  The beautiful views of the snowcapped Gore Range were enhanced by the wonderful weather. Thirty teams across the three divisions began their hunt for a Vail Shootout Championship today and all thirty will return to action tomorrow.  The majority of the favored teams advanced today as most of the games ended with lopsided final scores.

Tomorrow the action concentrates in the town of Vail with all the games at Ford Field, Athletic Field and Donovan Park. In addition, a special exhibition game will be played tomorrow in the Zenmaster division (age 60 and up) at 4:30pm on Ford Field.
