Chumash History & Basic Rules:
The organizers of the Vail Lacrosse Shootout wanted to expand the youth participation in the event. The idea was 3 on 3 lacrosse. Flip Naumburg, developer of the Rock-it-Pocket and the Cobra head, created and added his distinctive design. The result was CHUMASH LACROSSE. So what’s a CHUMASH? -An Indian tribe inhabiting the southwest areas of California. That’s why we call the game CHUMASH LACROSSE. It’s true to its Indian origin, but it definitely has a western flair. A small game (3 on 3) that plays like the big one. The field is 50 yards long and 30 yards wide. The goal (6 ft by 12 in) is in an elliptical crease centered in the field. Clearing lines (much like basketball) are at both ends of the field. A goal is scored as you hit the net. Each team attacks the goal from its designated side. Each game runs two 10-minute running halves. Penalties are served in “shots” rather than time. Two shots for personal and one shot for technical. No scores are kept for the games. The aim of the Chumash tournament is to provide an environment to improve skills and enjoy the sport as part of the 39th annual Vail Lacrosse Shootout.
